Why are we named Big Room?
Space Monkey from Leo Burnett on Vimeo.
Created as a collaboration between World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Ben Lee and Leo Burnett, “Space Monkey” carries a message about our planet, and features Ben Lee’s track, “Song for the Divine Mother of the Universe”.
Naming a company is worse than naming a band. We spent months, literally, poring over possibilities. Who are we? What do we stand for? A name needs to evoke all these things and more.
Well, this video does a much better job than we could of explaining why. The Big Room is simply another way of saying our home: earth.
Big Room comes from the carpenter slang for outside (here’s where we found it). As in “I’m going out the Big Room”.
We like carpentry because it makes us think about craftsmanship, working together to build something of shared value, like a home, or a table. We like carpentry sayings like ‘measure twice cut once’ – which is why we’re doing all this preparation before even applying for dot eco.
Most of all, we like the name Big Room because we like our home, just like the space monkey, and we want to be careful about how we build it.
